Animate a Photo into Cinematic AI Video: Start-Frame Workflow
Turn a keep-worthy portrait still into a short cinematic clip in OpenVideos Create: start-frame-video category, motion-only prompts, failure checks, and registry credit anchors for Seedance and Hailuo.

Result and prerequisites
You end with one short clip where a still you already like becomes the first frame of an image-to-video job: same face, wardrobe, and light, with a controlled camera move and one small subject action.
This workflow is for creators who already have (or can generate) a portrait or editorial still strong enough to post alone. If you only have a vague vibe and no locked composition, start with How to Make Cinematic AI Video on text-to-video instead.
Prerequisites:
- An OpenVideos account with enough credits for at least one video job (signup bonus is 50 credits for 30 days; many video jobs cost more than 50 alone).
- One still you would keep even if motion fails.
- Willingness to write a motion-only prompt, not a second full scene description.
Product path: Create category start-frame-video. Marketing hub: /image-to-video (defaults to hailuo-02-i2v). Credit packs: /pricing.
What “animate photo cinematic” means here
In OpenVideos terms this is image-to-video with a start frame, not magic “make it a movie” marketing.
| Keep from the still | Add in the prompt |
|---|---|
| Face, hair, wardrobe, pose | One primary subject action (blink, breath, hair drift, slow turn) |
| Framing and eyeline | One primary camera move (slow push-in, locked-off, gentle track) |
| Key light and location | Timing language (“over 4 seconds”, “holds still at the end”) |
If the prompt re-describes the subject, location, and light that the photo already shows, the model gets two competing briefs. That is the usual reason a good still turns into a different person mid-clip.
Input prep: is this still usable?
Reject the still before you spend video credits if any of these are true:
- Face unreadable at phone size (heavy crop, sunglasses + shadow, motion blur).
- Hands dominating the frame with messy fingers (i2v amplifies hand errors).
- Busy readable signage behind the subject (text morphs; ban it in the still if you can).
- Multiple competing subjects when you only want one hero.
- Extreme wide establishing shot with a tiny face (motion will wander to the background).
A usable start frame for a cinematic portrait clip is usually a medium or medium-close still, one subject, clear eyeline, and a little negative space in the direction you want the camera to travel.

Treat the still as locked production art. The video job’s job is motion, not a costume redesign.
Workflow (≥5 steps)
1. Lock the still (do not animate yet)
Save the exact file you will upload. If you are still iterating beauty or wardrobe, stay on an image model. Switching to video while the still is unfinished burns credits on identity fixes that belong upstream.
2. Open Create on start-frame-video
In Create, select category start-frame-video (Image → Video). Do not stay on text-to-video and paste “animate this photo” with no upload. Browse models in this category currently include seedance-2-i2v, wan-2-5-i2v, hailuo-02-i2v, and seedance-v1-5-pro-i2v-720p (conf/modelCatalog.ts). The /image-to-video hub preselects hailuo-02-i2v.
3. Upload the start frame
Upload the still into the first-frame control. Registry / UI field names you may see: first_frame_image (primary), plus aliases img_url / image depending on the model schema. One image. No collage.
4. Write a motion-only prompt
Use this skeleton (copy and fill):
Keep the same person, wardrobe, and rooftop dusk light from the start frame.
Camera: slow push-in over 4 seconds, stabilized, end on a medium close-up.
Subject: she holds eye contact; soft breath; a few strands of hair drift in the wind; minimal head turn.
Natural pores, filmic grain, restrained color grade.
No text, no watermark, no logos, no morphing hands, no second person entering frame.

5. Set duration, aspect, audio; then read the credit total
Pick the destination aspect in Create (for example 16:9 editorial or 9:16 shorts). Keep the first take short.
Registry cost anchors (re-check Create before submit; formulas can change):
| Model id | Example settings | Registry credits |
|---|---|---|
seedance-v1-5-pro-i2v-720p | 5s, audio off | 75 (5 × 15) |
seedance-v1-5-pro-i2v-720p | 5s, audio on | 150 (5 × 30) |
hailuo-02-i2v | 768p | 200 |
hailuo-02-i2v | 1080p | 300 |
seedance-2-i2v | 5s, 480p | 260 (5 × 52) |
seedance-2-i2v | 5s, 720p | 350 (5 × 70) |
For cheap motion tests, prefer Seedance v1.5 Pro i2v, 5s, audio off (75) before you escalate. The hub default Hailuo path is 200 at 768p. Pack math and lot expiry: AI Video Credits Explained.
6. Generate one take; stop after the first readable failure
Submit once. Watch for identity drift, hand morph, and camera jitter. Do not queue five parallel jobs with the same broken prompt.
7. Diagnose, then change one variable
| If this fails | Change this next | Leave alone |
|---|---|---|
| Face morphs | Shorter action; stronger “same person / same wardrobe” line | Location rewrite |
| Soap-opera jitter | One camera move only; remove subject dance verbs | Resolution jump |
| Background wanders | Tighter still crop; ban “pan across city” | New model immediately |
| Audio distracts | Turn audio off for the next take | Prompt length |
Only after a clean motion take should you raise duration, resolution, or move to a higher-credit model.
Checkpoint list
Before you call the job done:
- Still alone looks postable.
- Category is
start-frame-video, not text-to-video. -
first_frame_image(or alias) is the exact keep file. - Prompt names one camera move and one subject action.
- Create credit total matches your budget (compare to soonest-expiring lot).
- First take reviewed for face/hand continuity before a second spend.
Common failures (boring, repeatable)
Re-described the whole scene. The still already has the dress and rooftop. The prompt should not invent a beach. Fix: delete subject/environment sentences that duplicate the photo.
Too much performance. “She spins, laughs, walks, waves, hair explodes” is five jobs. Fix: breath + hair drift + eye contact.
Wrong category. Text-to-video with “use my photo” and no upload ignores the still. Fix: start-frame-video + upload.
Signup-bonus surprise. 50 credits will not fund a Hailuo 1080p experiment (300). Fix: check Create; buy a pack on /pricing if needed.
Limits
- This is a workflow, not a multi-model beauty benchmark. No ranked “best face model” claim without a logged same-still study.
- Credit numbers above are Model Registry formulas as of 2026-07-30. Trust the live Create total.
- Soft motion (breath, hair, push-in) is an editorial default for portrait continuity, not a guarantee of higher success rate across every model.
- First + last frame is a different category (
start-end-frame-video) and belongs in a separate workflow post. - Generation is credit-metered. This article does not claim open-ended free cinematic video.
Weak next step
Open Create on start-frame-video, upload your keep still, paste a motion-only prompt, select seedance-v1-5-pro-i2v-720p at 5s with audio off, confirm 75 credits (or whatever Create shows), and run a single take.
